2015 Trade Deadline: Will Dan Haren Struggle With Cubs?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Chicago Cubs make their first move of the 2015 deadline by acquiring veteran pitcher Dan Haren from the Miami Marlins. Haren is 7-7 with a 3.42 ERA in 21 starts with Miami. Here is how the deal shakes out:

Perhaps the best part of this deal for the Cubs is the fact that the Dodgers are still paying Haren’s $10 million salary. Haren’s career numbers at Wrigley Field are a cause for concern though. He is 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA in five career starts in his new home. Also, the only NL Central opponent that Haren has an ERA under 4 against in his career is the Milwaukee Brewers.

Haren may help the Cubs, but his days of helping your fantasy team could be over. He isn’t much of a strikeout pitcher anymore anyway, and his win total won’t increase exponentially. 7-7 is about as good as you can ask for with an ERA in the mid 3’s. If you can move Haren for any type of value, I would advise doing so. Just like the Marlins did.

  • Ivan Pineyro enters the Marlins system as the number 26 overall prospect for them. He was 7-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 107.1 innings pitched for AA Tennessee this season. He will join the Marlins system at AA as well, and could figure into the mix for a job in the Marlins rotation next spring. He will likely have minimal value even when he does make it to the majors.

Elliot Soto projects as a utility infielder if and when he makes it to the major leagues. He is hitting .275 with 5 steals and 18 RBI for AA Tennessee this year. He ascended as far as AAA last season, but hit just .241 there in 29 games. Soto only has three home runs in 1,887 minor league at bats, and offers little speed as well. He really had no place in a loaded Cubs system.

The Cubs gave up two long shots to get the services of a “free” Dan Haren. This trade really could not have gone any better for them, even though I am leery about how Haren will do at Wrigley Field. He may still be a streaming option in favorable road matchups down the stretch though.

Miami moved two starting pitchers, so this should open a slot in the rotation for youngsters Jose Urena and Justin Nicolino in the rotation. Nicolino is one of the Marlins’ top prospects, and could make an impact for your fantasy team down the stretch. Stash him if you have the bench spot available. Urena will likely be a factor in favorable matchups only for the time being. Both have pitched pretty well in their brief major league careers, posting ERA’s just over 4.
