Oregon Ducks running back Thomas Tyner underwent successful shoulder surgery on Friday night, and as a result will miss the entire 2015 season. Tyner injured his shoulder in last season’s 45-20 victory over the Washington Huskies. According to CSNNW, the running back continued to experience pain throughout the offseason, which eventually led to Friday’s surgery.

Tyner was expected to back up returning starter, and Heisman watch list candidate, Royce Freemen. Earlier this week, Oregon coach Mark Helfrich discussed his team’s need for a deep backfield, stating that the Ducks need every body they can get.

"“They will compete their tails off,” Helfirch said. “They are the perfect example of guys that coach each other during practice…We need all of them, especially at that position. Those guys are going to get hit.”"

Without Tyner, Helfrich could likely to move Byron Marshall back to running back – his position prior to moving to wideout last year.

Last season Tyner racked up 573 yards rushing on 113 carries (5.1 yards per game) and ran for five touchdowns in 11 games. He also collected 11 passes for 64 yards and a score.

Oregon kicks off the season on September 5 at home against the Eastern Washington Eagles. That game will be a warm-up for the team’s first big challenge the following week – a road contest against Michigan State and its stout defense. The Ducks routed the Spartans in last year’s contest at Autzen, outscoring Michigan State 28-3 in the second half.
