Kirk Herbstreit decided to try and steal a little shine from the NFL’s opening Sunday by tweeting out his top-four college football teams following Week 2 of the season. Herbie’s top two are familiar faces – Ohio State and Alabama – while his third and fourth squads are a little more surprising – UCLA and TCU.

Here’s a quick rundown on each of the top-four.

  1. Ohio State – The defending champs have started slowly in their first two contests, but by games’ end they simply overwhelmed opponents. They blanked Hawaii on Saturday (coming off a short week) and have outscored opponents 80-24.
  2. Alabama – The Crimson Tide opened their season with an impressive, dominant win over Wisconsin and then punished Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Quarterback Jake Coker appears to be coming into his own as a serviceable starter. Derrick Henry has been as advertised.
  3. UCLA – Jim Mora’s Bruins have pummeled opponents in their first two games. UCLA’s defense hasn’t allowed more than seven points in a quarter; it’s offense has scored in all eight periods. Freshman Josh Rosen has been as advertised, and carries a 64.9% completion percentage and 142.1 rating.
  4. TCU – The Horned Frogs will be out for blood this season. Saturday’s 70-7 victory over Stephen F. Austin was the football equivalent of a snuff film. After a shaky opener against Minnesota, TCU got back on track this past week.
