Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was helped off the field against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday afternoon after getting hit from the side. Roethlisberger immediately went down and stayed on the field for several minutes before being helped by medical personnel to the sideline. There is no immediate word on his condition moving forward.

It appears that Roethlisberger injured his left knee, but there has not been a diagnosis. Without Roethlisberger, the Steelers are playing with Michael Vick under center. Vick was signed this offseason after backup Bruce Gradkowski was injured in the preseason. Roethlisberger was carted off the field after sitting on the bench for a few minutes.

If Roethlisberger is out for any period of time, the Steelers are in all kinds of trouble. Last year, Roethlisberger tied for the passing crown with Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and came into Week 3 behind only Tom Brady in passing yards. The Steelers are relying heavily on the offense to make a playoff push, with Pittsburgh’s defense in all kinds of distress. The Steelers are going from long-time defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau to Keith Butler, while Ike Taylor, Troy Polamalu and Jason Worilds all retiring.

Last year, Roethlisberger went for career-highs in  yardage (4,952) and touchdowns (32) and completion percentage (67.1). The Steelers are already banged up, with Pittsburgh without All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey. Pittsburgh is currently 1-1 and in live action against the St. Louis Rams.

We will have updates as they come on Roethlisberger’s condition.
