Dexter Fowler: 3 Best Fantasy Free Agent Landing Spots

With MLB winter meetings only matter of weeks away, the free agency hot stove should start to heat up here real soon. One of the more intriguing free agent this year is, Dexter Fowler, coming off a career best season in 2015. For years now we have been teased by Fowler’s dynamic skillset so to finally see him put it all together over a full season was an indicator of his fantasy upside.

Owners should deem Fowler’s last season line, .250/17 HR/20 SB/102 R/.757 OPS, as his fantasy ceiling with a possible small uptick in the AVG department. But, that type of season is solid in its own right, so Fowler’s value next season should remain solidly in the mid rounds.

Here are three of the better fantasy landing spots for Dex in 2016.

Los Angeles Angels

With an outfield combination of Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun already emplaced, you would think that the Halos could throw just about league average outfielder in left and the would be just fine. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case in 2015 as the Angels wound up getting the league’s worst statistical production from the left field position.

They went through over five different options in left and none of them proved to be able to lock down the position leaving them with huge need heading into 2016. Fowler would fill multiple holes for them, as he offers a switching hitting stick top at the top of the order, a speed threat and solid defense.

With Albert Pujols out for the foreseeable future, the Angels will have to slide Trout down in the order allowing Fowler to be the beneficiary of the stats that would come batting in front of Trout. If he lands with the Angels continue to target him aggressively next season.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox will be one of the more interesting teams to watch this offseason as it will be curious to see what immediate type of upgrades they will make through free agency. Their offense was so disappointing last season that you could argue that anyone with a pulse and bat would be an upgrade over who they batted in 2015.

They have some intriguing offensive pieces, Jose Abreu, Melky Cabrera, and Adam Eaton, but they still lack another dynamic playmaker. This is where Fowler could step in move to left or right field and offer them an upgrade over the ever dissatisfying production from Avisail Garcia.

While the move to U.S. Cellular wouldn’t sway his stat totals too much, Fowler never even hit more than 13 HR with Colorado, his stats would seem to have safer floor in Chicago as opposed to going to a more spacious ballpark. A potential top of the order of Fowler/Eaton/Abreu could prove to be a handful and we could even see Fowler even improve on last season’s stats.

Washington Nationals

One of the more overlooked problems for the Nationals last season was the absence of Denard Span in center. Span brought solid defense and served as a great table setter, so his impending free agency leaves the Nats with a spot that Fowler could step right in and fill. The Nationals lineup should rebound in 2016 with a healthy Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth (for right now at least) to begin the season.

So if the Nats could bring in Fowler and insert him atop of the order in front of Rendon and Harper, it would allow Fowler to increase his counting stats nearly similar to what he was able to do atop the Cubs lineup. This move would make sense and fantasy owners should feel a little more comfortable picking him if he landed here because it wouldn’t be a tremendous drop-off between the Cubs and Nationals lineups in 2016. Keep targeting him.
