Ranking the eight No. 15 vs No. 2 upsets in March Madness history
8. Norfolk State: 86, Missouri: 84 (2012)
Starting off our list is a relatively recent contest between the No. 15 seed Norfolk State Spartans and the No. 2 seed Missouri Tigers. While it’s obviously impressive any team a seed that low is able to go out and topple a team that was dominant for most of the year, there’s a lot to take in when it comes to the best moment in the history of Norfolk State basketball.
On the one hand, the Spartans had numerous massive performances from their guys under the bright lights of March Madness, headlined by big man Kyle O’Quinn who finished the game against Missouri with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks. Through in the fact that they had two more 20-point scorers in this game and it’s not hard to see why Norfolk State had the highest point total of a winning No. 15 seed until Middle Tennessee handled their business.
On the other hand, though, Missouri was overrated for much of the year in college basketball and their defense was the primary reason as to why, a fact that the Spartans exploited. Moreover, Norfolk State barely put up a whimper in the next round against Florida as they were trounced. Even if they come up at the bottom of these rankings, though, a No. 15 seed getting a win in March Madness is nothing to scoff at in the slightest.
