Buster Posey was recently diagnosed with a bruised foot and was forced to miss a game for the San Francisco Giants. While the injury may not be serious, here are a few options that can fantasy owners can target as insurance just in case.

Buster Posey is listed as day-to-day by the Giants with a bruised foot. No one wants to overreact when a star, especially a catcher, picks up a little knock. However, it is always good to have a backup plan in place, because you often are counting on your studs to be your team leaders and not spend time out with injury.

The first guy that should be examined is Posey’s direct backup at catcher in San Fran, Trevor Brown. Brown is not much of a hitter, but he’s also not Posey’s real backup. The Giants decided that Posey’s regular backup for the last few seasons, Andrew Susac, would be better off getting regular playing time in AAA to begin the year. If Posey was actually going to miss an extended length of time, the house’s money is on Susac to come up and leapfrog Brown into the starting role.

Susac, in contrary to Brown, has shown in MLB time that he can hit. He has a couple double-digit home run seasons in the minors, and has 6 career big league HRs in about half a season’s worth of at-bats. He would have a bit of fantasy value if he were to step in for Posey.

Ideally, you aren’t stuck in a situation where Buster Posey’s direct backup is your only option if he faces time off due to injury. Sure, it’ll be hard to find a catcher with upside on the waiver wire, but you can at least find guys who will contribute. Names like Chris Iannetta, Jason Castro, A.J. Pierzynski, and more have regular starting jobs and have been fantasy contributors in the past.

There have been a few leagues recently that have Francisco Cervelli on the waiver wire, and he is certainly more than serviceable for any length of time if Posey is out. You’ll never replace your star catcher, the best you can hope to do is stop the bleeding.

Buster Posey is probably fine. A bruised foot is not a big deal, even for a catcher, unless it is a sign of something bigger. The one thing to avoid in this situation is overreaction. If you have a spot that is carrying a deadweight and have daily lineup moves, go ahead and pick up a catcher with favorable matchups and some pop and wait out the few days until Buster is back in the lineup.

Even picking up Trevor Brown for a few days won’t hurt your fantasy team; it just won’t help either. Hopefully Buster Posey is just fine and can help you win a championship in a few days when he returns. If you’re panicked about his injury, these are just a few options to address the concern.
