The A’s took a bit of a hit to their offense when it was announced 1B/OF Mark Canha would miss the rest of the season. What is the fallout from the news?

The Oakland Athletics are trucking along this season, 18-22 and five games back of first place. The offense isn’t as high-powered as some of the other teams in their division, but have some pieces that get the job done. One of them, however, will now be out for the rest of the season. It was announed on Tuesday afternoon that Mark Canha will undergo hip surgery.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Canha had an excellent rookie season last year. In 124 games, he hit 16 home runs, 70 RBI and .254. This season, however, has been a completely different story. He’s played in just 16 games with three home runs, six RBI and a .122/.140/.341 line.

It was reported on May 10 by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that Mark Canha went back to the Bay Area to undergo an MRI on his left hip. In the article, he was quoted as saying he was in excruciating pain when he’s hitting. “Any rotating, it feels locked up. It doesn’t feel like I can swing very hard at all,” he said.

The MRI revealed that he will undergo season-ending surgery to repair an impingement in his left hip, similar to what Devin Mesoraco went through last season. It’ll require six months of recovery following the operation.

This is obviously the main factor to his poor performance this season. If he can’t put any power behind the ball, the average will be where it is. With the level of pain he said to be going through, I’m surprised he was able to hit three home runs.

Mark Canha wasn’t owned in many leagues, just 0.4 percent. There isn’t much of a fantasy reaction for the injury, except for those 0.4 percent of owners. The outfield is pretty much set. Yonder Alonso is now at first base. If, for some reason, you need a replacement, Mike NapoliSteve Pearce and Justin Bour are widely available.

Canha will look to contribute when he’s 100 percent healthy next season. Though, the 27-year-old may not have much time to be a factor for fantasy owners.
