Baylor quarterback Seth Russell announced that he is healthy and has been cleared to play in 2016.

While this may seem insignificant in comparison to the scandal at Baylor, the football team received some positive news on Thursday. Quarterback Seth Russell announced on Instagram that his “neck healed perfectly” and he is “fully released” to play in 2016.

Russell suffered a scary season neck injury last year, and had surgery to repair it in October. Russell was one of the best quarterbacks in college football prior to the injury, throwing for 2,104 yards and 29 touchdowns (to only six interceptions) in Baylor’s explosive offensive attack.

Russell’s back-up Jarrett Stidham also performed well in his absence, but after Stidham went down with a broken ankle, the Bears fell apart down the stretch.

With Art Briles gone and obvious punishment soon to be handed down, nobody really knows what the Baylor football program will be like going forward. That being said, they are still a talented team set up for success in 2016, especially now that their starting quarterback will be there to lead them.

2016 will be Russell’s final season at Baylor, and while the high-octane spread offense obviously inflated his numbers, Russell will likely have an opportunity at the NFL if he continues to perform this season.

He is a talented passer who showed a lot of upside and ability next season. If he leads Baylor with another impressive season both statistically and in the win department, Russell is undoubtedly going to have an opportunity to prove himself at the next level.
