Baltimore Orioles acquire Steve Pearce for the fourth time

It’s kind of like an old girlfriend. Steve Pearce is familiar for the Orioles. He is comforting. And they decided that they just couldn’t live without him anymore. Here is what it took to get him back:

The Pearce saga in Baltimore first began in June of 2012 when the Orioles bought him from the Yankees. He hit .254 with three homers and 14 RBI in 71 at bats for the Orioles that year, but they still waived him in late July. The Astros picked him up, then a month later sold him to the Yankees. The Yankees waived him again at the end of the 2012 season and he was claimed by Baltimore.

Round two with the Orioles went well. He hit .284 with 25 homers and 62 RBI in 447 at bats over two years. He was released by the Orioles in April of 2014. They re-signed him two days later. He established himself as a commodity at a few different positions and hit for good power in his time in Baltimore. He left as a free agent at the end of last year.

The Rays promptly signed Pearce. He is hitting .309 with 10 homers and 29 RBI in 204 at bats. Pearce can spell Chris Davis at first base, Jonathan Schoop at second base, Mark Trumbo or Hyun Soo Kim in the outfield. However, most of his playing time will come at the expense of Pedro Alvarez.

Alvarez is hitting .244 with just four homers and 24 RBI in 212 at bats. This will likely be a platoon situation to start with, which really hurts those of us who relied on Pearce at second base in our fantasy leagues after he gained eligibility there earlier this year.

You can still hang on to Pearce in leagues with deeper benches, but unless he takes Alvarez’s job completely, he isn’t worth the roster slot in standard leagues.

The 21 year old Heim was a third round pick of the Orioles in 2013. He is hitting .216 with seven homers and 30 RBI in 88 games at high-A Frederick. If he does have a fantasy impact, it wont be for a few years.
