Recapping the fourth round of pool play in the men’s volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The men’s volleyball tournament resumed on Saturday at the 2016 Rio Olympics, as teams looked to move up the standings halfway through the qualifying rounds.

Team USA’s comeback bid continued with a hard-fought win over France in four sets behind 18 points apiece from Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell. After being upset twice to open the tournament, the United States has now won two matches in a row and has six points to match four other teams for second place in Pool A.

The night closed with a critcal Pool A match between first place Italy and hosts Brazil. After narrowly losing the first set, the Italians impressively rallied back 25-23, 25-22, 25-10 over the last three. Italy is now clear in first with 12 points, but the remainder of the qualifying spots in Pool A will be hotly contested in the final two matches.

Elsewhere in Pool A, Canada easily swept winless Mexico 25-20, 25-13, 25-22. Graham Vigrass had 15 points and five blocks to lead the Canadians. who still have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals as a heavy underdog.

The most entertaining match of the day came between Poland and Russia with critical positioning in Pool B on the line. The teams alternated wins in the first four sets before Russia won a wild fifth 15-13 to move to eight points on the tournament.

Argentina easily dispatched Cuba and now has nine points, tied with Poland for the top mark in the group. Iran held off Egypt’s upset bid with a 28-26, 25-22, 25-16 sweep behind 21 points from Shahram Mahmoudi. The Iranians are in good shape to advance in fourth place with seven points, now four clear of Egypt.
