Trevor Plouffe has struggled with inconsistency and injury this season for the Twins. But, since his return from the DL, he has been hot at the plate. Could he be a waiver wire option?

There have not been too many bright spots this season for the Minnesota Twins. One of their sources of struggles, was that Trevor Plouffe struggled to get off to a fast start, and even missed time with a rib injury. Plouffe is by no means a fantasy dynamo, but he has been able to provide solid power numbers over the last handful of seasons.

Since returning from the DL this month, Plouffe has been hot at the plate, showing his run production skill. He has notched 16 hits over his last 17 games, while homering twice and knocking in 13 RBI. He is extremely streaky, but when he is hot, fantasy owners can bank on him to provide power production.

The Twins are not going to win many games this season, but they do possess a sneaky good lineup. With Brian Dozier, Joe Mauer, and Max Kepler hitting in front of him, and Miguel Sano slotted in behind him, it is easy to see how the counting stats will be there for Plouffe moving forward.

More from Fantasy Baseball

His average will never be pretty, career .246 hitter, but he has mashed at least 14 HR the last four seasons, and has 166 RBI the last two seasons. Owners more than likely picked Plouffe late in drafts at a CI position, but after struggling so badly to begin 2016, he is available in a majority of leagues. Therefore, astute owners can either wait to see if Plouffe is going on another prolonged hot streak, or confidently add him now knowing that he is hitting the ball the best he has all season.

With the fantasy playoffs merely weeks away, waiver options like Plouffe are becoming more appealing. That is not to say that adding him will guarantee success, but he has the recent track record, has notched his fair share of hits, and has homered in back to back games, so the signs of life are there.
