Lyon earned qualification to the Champions League group stage by finishing second in Ligue 1 last season, 31 points behind French champions PSG. They were dominated by PSG to start this season as well, losing 4-1 in the French Super Cup, and have lost their past two league games, 4-2 away at Dijon and 3-1 at home against Bordeaux. Lyon’s success or failure in this competition will depend largely on the performances of forward Alexandre Lacazette, who has been attracting the interest of some of Europe’s elite teams over the past few seasons. He has six league goals in only three games played so far this season, and will be hoping to make his mark on an even bigger stage.

Dinamo Zagreb have won Croatia’s first division a ridiculous 11 years in a row and have now qualified for the Champions League group stage two years in a row. They face an uphill task, however, in a group containing Lyon, Sevilla and Juventus. It seems highly unlikely they will advance to the round of 16, but with a bit of luck, a third place finish and qualification for the Europa League’s round of 32 is not out of the question.
