Diamondbacks Brandon Drury: September Rebound Worth Adding

Diamondbacks utility man Brandon Drury is heating up at the end of the season. With limited options on the waiver wire, he should be added for the playoffs.

Regardless of whether a baseball team is still competing for a playoff spot, the hitters and pitchers still have fantasy value. They don’t give up until the final pitch, and neither should you. The Arizona Diamondbacks have value in some of their hitters. One of them is on a nice hitting streak and should be added. His name is Brandon Drury.

For the season, Drury’s numbers are not that bad. In 118 games, he has a .279 average, .323 on-base percentage with 14 home runs, 46 RBI and 47 runs scored. He also has 88 strikeouts and 25 walks. I’m surprised his ratio stats were able to stay where they are given the summer he head.

Entering June, Drury had a .287 average and .319 OBP. Not the best, but respectable. At the end of August, those numbers dropped to .262 and .304, respectively. In 189 at-bats, he had just 14 extra base hits and 16 RBI.

Drury made a complete 180 when September began. It started a little rough, surprisingly, as he and the Diamondbacks started the month in Colorado.

He went 3-for-8 with three RBI. Since then, he is hitting .452/.514/.935 with four home runs, nine RBI and eight runs with four multi–hit games.

He is in the middle of a seven-game hit streak. In that span, he has three doubles and the four homers.

While he does have multiple two-strikeout games, the power and contact outweighs the negative. Drury does not walk enough to be a big help in OBP leagues, but his number of hits will help both statistics.

In ESPN fantasy games, Drury is eligible at second base, third base and outfield. He spent the last week playing all three positions. This gives you the ability to move Drury around while benching the other inactive players, especially in deeper leagues.

Drury has been added in 23.9 percent of leagues over the last week, just when his hitting streak began. Coincidence? I think not. Pick him up and enjoy the stats he will put up in the final weeks of the season.
