Stanford wideout Francis Owusu takes nasty hit vs UCLA (video)
By John Buhler

Stanford Cardinal wide receiver Francis Owusu takes a huge hit against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night down in Pasadena in Week 4.
The No. 7 Stanford Cardinal had a huge Pac-12 rivalry game against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday evening at the Rose Bowl. Though UCLA entered the game unranked, the Bruins are knocking on the door of getting back into the AP Top 25. It’d be pretty easy with a star quarterback like sophomore Josh Rosen.
Rivalry games are always intense. One play early in the game between the Bruins and Cardinals on Saturday night immediately comes to mind. Stanford wide receiver Francis Owusu gets absolutely leveled on a pass between the hash marks.

Owusu took a shot to the head on that incomplete pass. He was completely airborne and looked defenseless on that reception attempt before getting clocked by a pair of UCLA safeties. Owusu would have certainly come down with the football if he didn’t get drilled in the head by the Bruins defensive back.

Stanford is more of a ground and pound, defense-first team for head coach David Shaw than anything. Though the Cardinal have Heisman hopeful Christian McCaffrey in their backfield, defense will be what brings Stanford another Pac-12 Championship this season.
Maybe that’ll be enough to get the Cardinal into the third annual College Football Playoff? The Big 12 seems like it is going to be the odd conference out of the playoff picture in the Power 5. Though the Houston Cougars could essentially take their playoff bid with a win over the Louisville Cardinals late in the season, Stanford has a real shot at the playoff coming out of the Pac-12.

However, the Cardinal haven’t done enough in the early part of their game against the Bruins to have a lead. They trail the Bruins 10-3 at halftime.
