The Boston Red Sox are heading to Cleveland to take on the Cleveland Indians for Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Thursday, October 6th. The Red Sox finished 2016 with a 93-69 record, while the Indians finished with a 94-67 record, making both teams fairly evenly matched for this best-of-five series.
Boston and Cleveland met twice during the 2016 season. In April 2016, the Red Sox visited Progressive Field but only two of the four scheduled games were played due to a rainout. The middle two games of the series were completed and were split evenly at 1-1. The Indians traveled to Boston in May, where the Red Sox took two of the three games.
This series is bittersweet for Indians manager Terry Francona, who skippered the Red Sox from 2004 to 2011. Francona notched two World Series championships for the team including the win in 2004, which was the first World Series title the Sox had won since 1918. The much beloved Francona was dismissed by the Red Sox in 2011, and he has spent the past four seasons in Cleveland.
Pitcher Rick Porcello gets the start for the Red Sox. Porcello is 0-2 in the postseason with a 4.41 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched. He’ll face Trevor Bauer of the Indians, who is starting in his first postseason competition. Bauer ended the 2016 campaign with a 12-8 record and 4.26 ERA.
