Everything seems to indicate that current Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman will be the next coach of the Texas Longhorns.

UPDATE: Bret McMurphy from ESPN is passing along a report — and therefore endorsing — that Herman will be named the head coach of Texas on Saturday.

Depending on the day over the past few weeks, you might have gotten a different answer about what’s going on with the head coaching position of the Texas Longhorns football team. One day, Charlie Strong is being fired. The next he’s coaching for his job. And then (admittedly less frequently), there was even talk he’d be sticking around. After his lackluster regular season finale against the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, though, the writing is on the wall. But so too is it for current Houston Cougars head coach, Tom Herman.

After the loss to TCU, it was reported by multiple sources that Strong would be fired at some point on Saturday. What’s more, the reports of Herman going to coach the LSU Tigers were proven wrong on Saturday morning. From multiple sources, the Tigers will name interim coach Ed Orgeron their head coach on Saturday afternoon.

So that leaves us with Tom Herman still at Houston with no chance of going to LSU and with Strong getting the ax at Texas. Considering that the Longhorns haven’t been shy about their pursuit of Herman, it seems that him heading to Austin is a formality at this point. In fact, a source told Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde that Texas is the first choice for Herman. With Strong being ousted, the math then isn’t difficult to calculate.

Herman was a hot commodity on the head coaching market last season, but stayed in Houston. Now it seems clear as to why as the frenzy around him has been wild towards the end of the season. With a 24-4 record at Houston and a national title behind his offense at Ohio State, it’s hard to argue with his track record. We’ll just have to see if that success continues in burnt orange, though.
