Kansas State vs. Texas A&M(-3.5) at Houston, TX(3):
Kansas State(8-4, 6-3 Big 12(10):
Wins: vs. Florida Atlantic(63-7), vs. Missouri State(35-0), vs. Texas Tech(44-38), vs. Texas(24-21), at Iowa State(31-26), at Baylor(42-21), vs. Kansas(34-19), at TCU(30-6)
Losses: at Stanford(13-26), at West Virginia(16-17), at Oklahoma(17-38), vs. Oklahoma State(37-43)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-4
Kansas State has one of the best defenses in the Big 12(10). Of course, that is like saying that the corn dogs are the best food at the fair. None of them are very good, but that’s the best you can get there. This offense is deceptively good behind QB Jesse Ertz. You don’t realize how fast he is until he runs by you. He may be the best dual threat quarterback in this game, but he isn’t the most heralded.
Texas A&M(8-4, 4-4 SEC):
Wins: vs. UCLA(31-24), vs. Prairie View A&M(67-0), at Auburn(29-16), vs. Arkansas(45-24), at South Carolina(24-13), vs. Tennessee(45-38), vs. New Mexico State(52-10), vs. UTSA(23-10)
Losses: at Alabama(14-33), at Mississippi State(28-35), vs. Mississippi(28-29), vs. LSU(39-54)
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-3
The Aggies lost the state of Mississippi without Trevor Knight, but Knight was in there for the losses to Alabama and LSU. A&M may have the best group of receivers in the SEC, but I still don’t think they have the best passer to get them the ball. That group takes a bit of a hit with the loss of Speedy Noil, but there are plenty of other able bodies to take the snaps
Prediction:
Who will do a better job of stopping the quarterback run game? A&M has a decided advantage with their receiving corps and RB Trayveon Williams. I would tend to say that Ertz is a better runner and better decision maker than Knight, even though he doesn’t have quite the athletic ability. Myles Garrett may be the best defensive player in college, but he can’t do it himself. I think K-State’s unit is better as a whole, but their secondary will struggle with A&M’s receivers. Can Knight get them the ball? He played pretty well against Kansas State as a member of Oklahoma, but I’ve seen enough from him to know that he is always one play away from a meltdown.
Pick: Kansas State
