(18)Stanford(-2.5) vs. North Carolina at El Paso, TX(3):
Stanford(9-3, 6-3 Pac 12):
Wins: vs. Kansas State(26-13), vs. USC(27-10), at UCLA(22-13), at Notre Dame(17-10), at Arizona(34-10), vs. Oregon State(26-15), at Oregon(52-27), at California(45-31), vs. Rice(41-17)
Losses: at Washington(6-44), vs. Washington State(16-42), vs. Colorado(5-10)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-3
Christian McCaffrey was an important part of this team, but the Cardinal didn’t really start moving the ball on offense until Ryan Burns took over at quarterback. That opened things up for McCaffrey to have a big second half of the year. However, the Cardinal will have to do without McCaffrey in the bowl game. Is Burns and a solid defense enough to take down a high-powered North Carolina offense?
North Carolina(8-4, 5-3 ACC):
Wins: at Illinois(48-23), vs. James Madison(56-28), vs. Pittsburgh(37-36), at Florida State(37-35), at Miami(FL)(20-13), at Virginia(35-14), vs. Georgia Tech(48-20), vs. Citadel(41-7)
Losses: vs. Georgia(24-33), vs. Virginia Tech(3-34), at Duke(27-28), vs. North Carolina State(21-28)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3
This North Carolina offense is dangerous. Mitch Trubisky may be the most NFL ready quarterback in college. The Tarheels will be without Elijah Hood, but McCaffrey sitting hurts Stanford much more. T.J. Logan is a suitable backup. The WR duo of Ryan Switzer and Bug Howard, not to mention slot man Austin Proehl, son of former NFL receiver Ricky Proehl, is going to be tough to stop. Even for a defense like Stanford.
Prediction:
For those hoping to see two very good running backs going head to head, the Sun Bowl apologizes. Unfortunately, this is going to be the norm going forward, especially for running backs. Running backs have a very short shelf life at the next level. They get maybe one good contract, tops. Now the North Carolina offense will steal this show.
Pick: North Carolina
