Taking a look at the updated 2017 Big East Tournament bracket following the first round action on Wednesday

Despite the turnover and changing teams in recent years, the Big East Tournament is one of the highlights of Championship Week. Maybe it’s the fact that it takes place in Madison Square Garden that makes it feel big, but whatever the reason, it certainly does. And on Wednesday, four of the 10 teams started to try and make their way through the 2017 Big East Tournament bracket.

The Big East tourney started with an absolute thriller between the St. John’s Red Storm and the Georgetown Hoyas. In that 8-9 matchup, the momentum didn’t stay in one place for very long and the game ultimately came down to the wire. Ultimately, though, St. John’s was able to outlast and advance in the 2017 Big East Tournament bracket to take on Villanova, the defending National Champions.

For the second matchup of the day, the drama wasn’t nearly as high throughout. DePaul tried to keep the pace with Xavier in the first half and managed to do so. However, they couldn’t hang in the second half and fell victim to an 11-point loss as they’ll face the No. 2 seed, Butler.

After a thrilling opener and then a solid showing in the late game, here’s a look at the updated 2017 Big East Tournament bracket with the pair of winners having advanced:

With Xavier advancing, it’s going to be exciting to see what kind of noise they can make. They’re a highly talented team and they could even cause a team like Butler some problems.
