We’re finally here. Past the faux drama of the conference tournaments, the field is about to be set for the real deal — the NCAA Tournament. Bracket competitions are being set up across the country, fans are preparing excuses for missing work on Thursday and Friday, and we’re all ready to overindulge in college basketball.

Much like last year, the field is wide open once again. While the favorite is arguably Villanova, who have earned the top overall seed in the tournament a year after winning it all. But the road to the championship is dark and full of terrors, and new contenders are all around looking to take down the champs.

Kansas, despite an unfortunate early exit from the Big 12 tournament, has ridden a 2 point guard, small ball system to one of the best records in college basketball. Frank Mason III is looking to wrap up an NPOTY-caliber senior year with a trip to the championship. And North Carolina is back as a 1-seed, looking to erase the disappointment of last year’s title game with their third championship in this millennium.

Contenders like Baylor, UCLA, and Oregon have risen, while traditional blue bloods like Duke and Kentucky lurk. Gonzaga’s got a 1-seed, but need to prove they can rise to the Final Four. This will certainly be one of the more wide-open championship chases in recent memory.

And in a year with so much parity and turmoil in the top 25, there are bound to be plenty of upsets — which is what most of us watch for, anyway. Lower seeded major conference teams like Michigan, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State will look to prove their bona fides with runs, while favorite mid-majors like Wichita State and Dayton will look to keep their own March Magic rolling. And we all know there will be a Cinderella that will rise from obscurity to capture the imagination of the country.
