The Northwestern Wildcats were absolutely dominated in the first half of their Second Round game against the No. 1-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs. However, the potential cinderella to end all cinderellas weren’t going to go down without a fight. Midway through the second half, they started to fight back and cut into the lead relatively quickly. After trimming it down to double digits, though, the refs seemed to momentarily stifle momentum.

And no one was less pleased about that than the fan that will be forever known as “Crying Northwestern kid.” He just simply couldn’t handle one flagrant foul call.

With Gonzaga having pushed the lead back to 11 points, Northwestern reserve Barret Benson ran into a Bulldogs player and was called for a flagrant foul. Per the rules, that gave the Zags the ball and free throws, a turning point in the game.

With such dire consequences at such a pivotal juncture in the game, the Wildcats bench was upset. But then CBS panned to the crowd and caught a glimpse of the aforementioned fan. And, well, he was absolutely losing his mind and was brought to legit tears by the call:

Hence the moniker, Crying Northwestern kid. He joins an elite group of March Madness memes that features one Villanova band member—a piccolo player—crying after an upset loss, among many others.

Lucky for Crying Northwestern kid, the call didn’t seem the faze the Wildcats too much. They continued to fight and chip away at the lead, pulling within seven points with just over four minutes to play. So cheer up, young man. There’s hope yet.
