Wichita State forward Darral Willis said he’d shut down Kentucky’s Bam Adebayo on the glass, but Bam’s mother had some words after the UK win.

There are times when it’s proper to talk a bit of trash and other times where you should probably hold off, at least for a bit. Wichita State Shockers forward Darral Willis undoubtedly falls into the latter category. Coming into their game on Sunday against the Kentucky Wildcats in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, Willis said that he and the Shockers were going to “shut down” star freshman Bam Adebayo, in reference to his rebounding (per KSTV).

Of course, that wasn’t what happened. Yes, the Shockers put up a great fight and had an opportunity to take a game-tying 3-point attempt in the final seconds. However, the fact that they were close had very little to do with neutralizing Adebayo.

Bam finished the afternoon with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes on the floor, coming up big on numerous occasions for the Wildcats.

After the game, Adebayo himself was relatively quiet in terms of a response, letting his stat-line and the win do his talking. His mother on the other hand was a little more vocal. Here’s what she had to say to reporters outside of the stadium about the situation:

Well, she’s most certainly not wrong about that. And again, advancing to the Sweet 16 also speaks volumes for Adebayo and Kentucky.

At the beginning of the season, the Wildcats star freshman big man showed flashes, but wasn’t a consistent force. By season’s end and the start of March Madness, however, he’s that and more. Subsequently, coming at him with pre-game trash talk is less than wise—especially if you don’t want to get owned by his mother after the game.
