NCAA Tournament 2017: 15 best moments
3. Florida beats Wisconsin at the buzzer
While the first stages of the NCAA Tournament weren’t boring by any means, they lacked a game filled with true madness until Florida took on Wisconsin in the Sweet 16.
This wouldn’t be the matchup many would pick to be a thriller, as both teams play ultra-efficient defense at a slow pace. After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes, Florida built a seemingly insurmountable 68-56 advantage with 5:24 to go.
The Badgers stormed back behind Koenig and Ethan Happ, although the former suffered a leg injury that kept him from shooting on Wisconsin’s final possession of regulation. Down 72-69 with three seconds left, Wisconsin turned to Zak Showalter, who hit an improbable running triple at the buzzer to force overtime.
Wisconsin had a chance to seal the game on a Khalil Iverson layup with 40 seconds left in the extra period, but Canyon Berry came up with an incredible chasedown block, allowing the Gators to tie the score a few seconds later. The Badgers appeared to have the contest won again on a pair of Nigel Hayes free throws with four seconds remaining, only for Chris Chiozza to hit a running 3-point shot of his own for a wild 84-83 win.
With two buzzer beaters in the span of five minutes of game time plus the Berry block, which will always have a special place in Gators history, the Florida-Wisconsin game made up for the lack of opening weekend chaos nearly on its own.
