DraftKings Early MLB Picks For May 6

There are three afternoon games this afternoon. Two of the pitchers cost in the five digits. Are either of them worth paying for on DraftKings? Where is the favorite stack with the Coors game at night? Let’s build us a lineup!

More from DFS

The early money line was up pretty high at 125.7. My early lineup was comfortably in since I replaced Tyler Collins with Matt Joyce. Derek Holland and Max Scherzer came through!

The winning lineup was comparatively low at 196.75. He had the Holland/Scherzer tandem with big afternoons from Marwin Gonzalez and Jose Abreu.

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

P: Jake Odorizzi ($7,900): Odorizzi is as good as it gets in the afternoon slate. He has held the Blue Jays to a .188 average in 138 at bats with four homers and 11 runs to go with 27 strikeouts. That is below his career whiff rate, but the Jays are still struggling on offense most games. I trust Odorizzi a lot more than Rick Porcello, even against the Twins. Marco Estrada has more strikeout potential, but his numbers aren’t a lot better than Odorizzi. I decided to pay up for hitters instead of Estrada.

P: Jason Vargas ($7,600): Vargas’s career numbers against Cleveland are not great, but he is 4-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 0.98 WHIP on the season. Edwin Encarnacion has hit Vargas hard, but he is struggling. Josh Tomlin has been dreadful so far this year, so Vargas has a great chance at picking up another win. I think he can limit Cleveland enough to give him solid value for this price point.

C: Sandy Leon ($3,100): My Red Sox stack against Nick Tepesch starts here. Christian Vazquez started behind the plate last night, so it looks to be Leon in the lineup for the day game. The Toronto-Tampa game could be a pitcher’s duel and Kansas City is struggling on offense. Cleveland is facing a solid pitcher, so the majority will use a Boston stack. I’m not getting left out of what could be a slugfest in Minneapolis.

1B: Kennys Vargas ($3,800): Vargas is 4-7 already against Rick Porcello with a walk, a double, a triple, a homer, three runs scored, and two RBI against him. The 2016 version of Rick Porcello is a mirage. He isn’t quite as bad as he has looked so far, but he is a pitcher with an ERA closer to 4.25 than 3.25. The Twins will get their runs today, and Vargas should have a lot to do with that.

2B: Brian Dozier ($4,800): Dozier is only 8-37(.216) against Rick Porcello in his career, but he has three walks, a double, three homers, seven runs scored, two steals, and an impressive eight RBI off of him so far. Like I said, the Twins are going to get their runs. It should be worth paying a little extra for Dozier today.

3B: Mike Moustakas ($4,000): Moose is 7-17(.412) with two walks, three doubles, two homers, six runs scored, and six RBI against Josh Tomlin in his career. I don’t really trust anyone in powder blue right now, but with numbers like that against a pitcher throwing beach balls, I’ll give it a whirl.

SS: Xander Bogaerts ($4,700): Bogaerts will be hitting near the middle of a potent offense against a mediocre AAA pitcher. Tepesch could really get lit up. I want as much exposure as possible to Boston players today.

OF: Mookie Betts ($5,500): Mookie is expensive, but his stolen base potential along with his power make him worth it.

OF: Andrew Benintendi ($4,700): Benintendi gets on base a lot, which is great for his runs total. He has some power and some speed just like Betts, so I want exposure to both of them.

OF: Corey Dickerson ($3,800): Dickerson is 5-11 with two walks, a homer, four runs scored, and three RBI against Marco Estrada. Estrada remains a good option today, but there was no way I was using Nick Tepesch, and I didn’t want to skimp on my Red Sox stack. Dickerson and maybe Kevin Kiermaier are the only Rays I would trust.
