Cameron Maybin is on a roll at the plate for the Angels. But, can fantasy owners fall for his tantalizing talent once again off the waiver wire?

There are some players that fantasy players continually get enamored with because of their raw talent and potential. Cameron Maybin falls under that umbrella, and the now 30-year-old, will forever be a case of ‘what if’? Now on his fourth team in four years,  Maybin finally has heated up at the plate for the Angels. But, should fantasy owners fall for him again?

Looking at his stat line on the season, .244/2 HR/11 RBI/10 SB/.719 OPS, it is not a standout performance. The steals are nice, but for the majority of the 2017 season, he has looked lost at the plate. But, instead of benching Maybin permanently, the team actually began to slot in him in the leadoff spot.

Since the move, Maybin has taken off.  He has nearly a week worth of action in the leadoff spot and posted an .542 AVG/1 HR/4 RBI/1 SB/9 R/1.478 OPS line.  He has admittedly been able to more aggressive now atop the order and that has paid huge dividends.

In terms of his fantasy value,  Maybin still provides some value worth rostering. Speed is hard to find nowadays and hitting in front of Mike Trout certainly helps drive up his counting stats. He also has 26 BB compared to 28 K so far in 2017, easily the best walk rate of his career.

While everything speaks to a possible turn around now in a favorable spot in the order, there are still some red flags. Owners are well aware of his injury history, but his batted ball data is not all that inspiring either. A 63% GB rate and 19% FB rate are not the greatest mixes. He is not a power threat by any means, but banking on the AVG based purely on GB finding holes is a tough ask for anyone.

Owners looking for a hot hand and a player that could build respectable counting stat numbers, Maybin is a guy to target. But, he just is not a player that owners should expect a ton from moving forward. Lowered expectations are always better, especially in this case. Yet, he is still worth an add.
