Derek Carr sets deadline to have contract extension in place by the start of training camp.

Derek Carr is scheduled to enter the 2017 season on the final year of his rookie contract. If the Oakland Raiders are going to extend their star quarterback beyond that, they have some work to do over the next two months.

Carr stated on Tuesday that he is setting a deadline to have an extension in place by the start of training camp in late July. If an agreement is not in place by then, he will end contract extension discussions.

“I wouldn’t even answer my phone,” said Carr. “The money isn’t the thing that drives me. … What drives me is making sure I’m giving everything that I have with my abilities, and making sure that we win. And I don’t want anything distracting my thought process at all. Now, that’s not a jab, or anything like that. That’s just me saying I’m not going to deal with anything that’s not helping me just focus on winning.”

Carr is coming off of the best season of his career as he threw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2016. While his excellent performance helped lead the Raiders into the playoffs, Carr broke his right fibula in Week 16  and missed his chance to lead the Raiders to a title.

While Carr has set this deadline, the good news for the Raiders is that it appears he wants to stay with the silver and black.

“I’ve made it very clear that I want to be a Raider for my entire career,” said Carr. “I don’t want to play for anybody else. So they know that. They’ve told me how bad they want me. So, we’ll see.”

With the Raiders in the midst of moving from Oakland to Las Vegas, locking up their star quarterback would certainly help stabilize the franchise.
