MLB Trade Deadline: 15 trades that need to happen
2. Mike Moustakas to the Red Sox
Rumors of an impending Todd Frazier to the Boston Red Sox trade had been swirling quite heavily, but the Yankees swooped in at the last second and stole him out from under Boston’s nose. The Red Sox have been seeking an upgrade at third base since the moment Pablo Sandoval showed up to his first Spring Training with the team grotesquely out of shape, and their search will have to continue. Sandoval’s remaining salary will be eaten by the Red Sox (definitely a fitting end to his time with the team), but they still need someone to play third base competently for the rest of the season.
We touched on the Royals briefly a few pages back, and they are a hard team to gauge as the deadline approaches. Their winning ways leading up to the All-Star Game have not carried over into the second half and they have fallen back below .500. They cannot afford to bet on this year’s team and lose it all in free agency.
Now is the time for the Royals to check in with the Red Sox about All-Star Mike Moustakas and see if Rafael Devers can be had in a trade. Devers would be the replacement the Royals need at third base when Moustakas vacates his spot. Kansas City has Boston over a barrel right now after they missed out on Todd Frazier. The Red Sox do have other options to consider like Jed Lowrie, Eduardo Nunez or Martin Prado, but Moustakas is the best.
