Kolten Wong is one of the hottest hitters in the league since August began. But, can the Cardinals’ infielder be trusted as a waiver wire add?

The Cardinals and Kolten Wong are having a strange season. St. Louis has uncharacteristically struggled to hover around the .500 mark this season. Wong started the year questioning his role with the team and even seemed to welcome a change of scenery. But, now healthy and back with the club, does his recent success warrant more fantasy attention?

Wong emerged in 2014 and 2015 as a potential 20 HR/20 SB threat. Fantasy owners were all aboard. That type of production is considered fantasy gold, not to mention it was coming from an MI. But, things went off the rails in 2016, and any fantasy excitement soon faded.

This season was more of the same. After, his public spat with the club, and two DL stints, he was well off the fantasy radar. Once promoted back to the bigs in July, Wong was back to getting regular starts. As the calendar turned to Aug., Wong came to life at the plate for the Cardinals.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Over the last week, he has posted a .385/1 HR/7 RBI/6 R/1.040 OPS line. He is swinging one of the best bats in the league and showing once again the promise he once had. He has a .296/2 HR/28 RBI/3 SB/.808 OPS line.

Looking deeper into his batted ball data, he is squaring the ball up well. He holds 17% LD, 54% Med and 25% Hard contact rates. He is also making contact at a career best 83% rate and his 15% K rate is right in line with his career norm.

His counting stats are down some due to being slotted near the bottom of the lineup, but as hot as he is, he is bound to move up. The speed drop is also somewhat tied to his lineup spot as well, he does not want to be thrown out while the pitcher is up, but he has not lost a step. Look for the SB numbers to rise before season’s end.

Kolten Wong has his starting job back and has heated up over the last few weeks. He shapes up to be a solid MI waiver wire add as the talent is still there and he has the skill to make an impact down the stretch.
