Floyd Mayweather promised to knockout Conor McGregor on August 26th. But how many knockouts does Mayweather have in his career?

According to official records, Floyd “Money” Mayweather has a professional record of 49 wins and 0 losses. 26 of those wins have come by knockout. Those records are maintained by BoxRec which was recognized as an official record keeper by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports in 2016.

Mayweather made his professional boxing debut in 1996 against Roberto Apodaca. He would finish that fight via TKO in the second round.

In 25 fights from 1996 to 2001, Mayweather would amass a record of 25-0. In those 25 fights, he would win 17 of them by knockout or technical knockout. There were also three “RTD” or referee technical decision victories in that span. An RTD is still a finish, but it is used to designate a fight being stopped between rounds. This usually occurs when either a fighter’s corner or the referee decides the fighter cannot continue.

After 2001, Mayweather’s pace slowed, both in the frequency of his fights and number of finishes.

After his 2001 RTD victory over Jesus Chavez, Mayweather would fight 22 times between 2002 and 2015. In that period he would finish six fights, five by KO/TKO and one by RTD.

Mayweather’s last knockout victory came over Victor Oritz in 2011. However, that finish did not come without controversy. Mayweather’s knockout shot was viewed as a sucker punch by some since it came after a break in the action due to an apparent attempted headbutt by Ortiz. Mayweather maintained it was a clean combination, stating,

“In the ring, you have to protect yourself at all times. After it happened, we touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left hook and right hand after the break. You just gotta protect yourself at all times.”

The fight with Conor McGregor will be Floyd Mayweather’s first fight in almost two years. He will also be looking to deny McGregor even the illusion of victory and earn his first knockout since 2011.
