Texas fans throw trash on field while being upset by Maryland (Video)
The Tom Herman era for the Texas Longhorns began with the team being upset by the Maryland Terrapins, which fans reacted to by throwing trash on the field.
The Texas Longhorns opened the 2017 college football season with renewed hope. After Charlie Strong failed to meet fans and the school’s enormous (unrealistic?) expectations, they brought in Tom Herman. As such, the former Houston head coach was expecting big things. So too was a national audience as the Longhorns entered the year ranked No. 23 in the country.
As they played the Maryland Terrapins in their season opener, things got off to a hot start. On their first drive — playing on defense — the Texas defense nabbed an interception and took it to the house. Unfortunately, the pleasantries for the most part ended there for the Horns.
Following that turnover, a visiting Maryland team settled down and started to move the ball at will. This was a Texas defense that was a sieve a year ago and it appeared that an offseason under Herman didn’t fix that entirely.
Things then took an ugly turn at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium late in the fourth quarter with an upset appearing imminent. Rather than just quieting up, fans began to throw trash and junk onto the field to express their disdain for what was happening.
Texas gonna Texas.
One of the most befuddling things about the Longhorns and expectations is their desire for immediate gratification. Herman is a proven head coach and coordinator who could well turn the entire program around. But at the same time, no coach is going to be able to take a sub-.500 team from a year ago and make them a National Championship contender immediately. That’s just not realistic.

So maybe hold onto your trash, Longhorns fans. Let Herman marinate in the program a little bit before you start trying to fire him. Then again, there’s probably already a petition up to do so somewhere.
