If you’re Scott Tolzien, or even Jacoby Brissett for that matter, you can’t be feeling the love right now.

According to most of the NFL world, the Indianapolis Colts are making a quarterback change for Week 2, turning to recently acquired Jacoby Brissett instead of longtime backup Scott Tolzien. A quick hook is all the rage right now in the AFC South, what with the Houston Texans throwing rookie Deshaun Watson into the fire on Thursday and getting rewarded with one stellar run that was enough to make a difference against the dreadful Cincinnati Bengals.

Except the Colts themselves haven’t acknowledged the switch. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes that according to the Colts’ official website, coach Chuck Pagano won’t name a starter for Week 2, apparently feeling it best to keep the Arizona Cardinals guessing. It’s also possible he still hasn’t quite made up his mind, as evidenced that Brissett and Tolzien apparently split first-team reps during the week.

The Colts were embarrassed on the road in Week 1, losing to the Los Angeles Rams 46-9. Tolzien was pretty awful in that game, completing 9-of-18 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Brissett played briefly in garbage time, completing two of his three passes.

Compounding matters is the fact that the Colts are also banged up, with center Ryan Kelly among the players who will miss the Cardinals game. The thought could definitely be that Brissett will at least be able to make some plays with his legs that the less mobile Tolzien can’t, and hey, that logic just worked for Houston.

The downside is that Brissett will have been with the Colts for exactly 15 days come game time, and it’s highly unlikely he has a deep and abiding knowledge of the playbook. Until Andrew Luck returns, Indianapolis is going to have a mess on its hands at the QB spot, and no amount of declining to reveal who’s starting can fix that.
