Grey’s Anatomy takes a break this week to give folks some Halloween goodness, but there’s still plenty to talk about without a new episode.

Okay, ladies and gentlemen, we have watched four episodes of Grey’s Anatomy season 14 so far. Since there’s no new episode on Thursday, Oct. 19, we have a chance to talk about some of the big developments of the season.

There are four that I just have to talk about:

  • Nathan and Meredith
  • Amelia and Owen
  • Arizona and Carina
  • Ben and Bailey

Of course, there have been plenty of other things, but the aforementioned relationships have changed significantly in the past four episodes (or at least, will soon). So let’s start at the beginning with Nathan and Meredith.

Nathan and Meredith

It’s actually unfortunate that we can still be talking about this. Like a bad stomachache, I really just want it to end. Honestly, it’s not like I’m a huge Derek Shepherd fan. But the show revolved around his relationship with Meredith so much before his death that it makes absolutely no sense to me, from a narrative standpoint, that they’d try to put her in a relationship with someone else. I’m not saying people can’t find love after their spouse passes away, but in this fictional Seattle setting, I wish they wouldn’t. Not only that, but Nathan Riggs is just not a cool character. His personality and his skills are very, very blase. Even his attempts to win back Megan felt so half-hearted. The incredible thing about Meredith is how intensely she feels things and how self-aware she is. And because of this, Riggs just seems like a bad match-up emotionally.

And speaking up bad emotional match-ups, let’s talk about #Omelia.

Owen and Amelia

After last week’s episode, Caterina Scorsone spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Amelia’s next steps and she said an important thing that I thought definitely needed to be clarified.

"She’s not going to become a different person. It’s not that they removed functioning parts of her brain. They removed a benign tumor and made room for her to not be affected by all of this crazy chemical interference. It’s more about restoring what is really Amelia and removing what is artificial, rather than some vast personality change."

This happens to be exactly what I was most worried about. I mean, we need to get to know her again. Which in any relationship — for anyone, whether it’s between two characters on the show, or between the audience and the characters — can be really intimidating. We, as viewers, know and love Amelia in a certain way. And what this tumor presents is the opportunity to love her even more. For me, though, it was some of those brazen flaws that made the character so special.

Arizona and Carina

I guess, in terms of women’s embracing their sexuality, this couple really hits all the main points, and that’s perfectly fine. But it still feels really superficial. Is that because we don’t know anything about Carina yet? I’m not sure. We do know that she helped find Amelia’s tumor and she seems like a sweet person.

But she doesn’t seem like the type of person who would want to co-parent with Arizona once Sofia comes to town. At the end of last week’s episode, Arizona randomly received a text that Sofia wanted to come home. I’ll be shocked if she brings Callie with her for more than a minute, and especially irritated if they made us witness their heartbreaking separation and ensuing custody battle just to have them get back together. Callie as her own character is kind of difficult to like, but I don’t know if I could ease myself back into that relationship.

Still, it would definitely have a leg-up on Arizona and Carina.

Ben and Bailey

There’s not much to say about this, because they’re like the mom and dad couple of the entire show. I think that’s supposed to be Catherine and Webber, but they bicker so much, it’s not fun to watch.

However, I love that Ben won’t tell Bailey about his new training, though we know that he’s basically obsessed with becoming a firefighter (in preparation for the spin-off). Understandably, he doesn’t seem to know how to broach the subject, and since Bailey has so much on her plate with the hospital, I don’t mind that he’s putting it off. I think this is like the third time he’s changed his career. We first met him as an anesthesiologist. Then, he chose to become a doctor. And now, he wants to fight fires. You gotta appreciate a man with ambition.

So while there’s no new episode tonight, I have plenty to think about in the meantime.

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy air Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Don’t forget to check back for our weekly recaps every week after the episode airs.
