The ending of a hard-fought contest between the No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys and No. 21 Iowa State Cyclones was controversial, but the referees got the call right.

One of the big winners of the early slate of games in Week 11 was the No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowboys, who earned an impressive 49-42 road win over the No. 21 Iowa State Cyclones to remain in the Big 12 title hunt.

The game was played within one score nearly throughout and naturally came down to the wire. Iowa State opened up a 42-34 lead with 8:38 to go before Mason Rudolph struck back with a pair of touchdown passes to put Oklahoma State in front by seven.

With time running out, Cyclones backup quarterback Zeb Noland drove down to the Oklahoma State 4-yard line looking to tie. Nolan tossed a jump ball for Marchie Murdock in the end zone, only for A.J. Green to come down with an incredible game-sealing interception on apparent simultaneous possession.

The referees ruled the play an interception on the field, a call that was upheld following a lengthy review. Iowa State fans were understandably upset at the controversial call, but it appears the refs got the call correct with Green coming down with first possession.

Of course, not everybody agrees with that assessment in Ames, including Murdock.

As with all simultaneous possession calls, the interception was close enough to be open for some debate, particularly given the fact that Murdock was the first to get his hands on the ball.

It’s unfortunate to see such a hard-fought game decided on a controversial call, but the refs were put in a tough situation and were never going to overturn the interception via review. The loss likely knocks Iowa State out of the Big 12 title hunt, while Oklahoma State still has a glimmer of hope.
