NBA All-Star: Jazz star Donovan Mitchell wins Verizon Slam Dunk Contest

Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell won 2018 Verizon Slam Dunk Contest at the NBA All-Star festivities on Saturday night.

The Slam Dunk Contest is the highlight of the NBA All-Star Weekend, and four stars were set to compete: Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers), Larry Nance Jr. (Cleveland Cavaliers), Dennis Smith Jr. (Dallas Mavericks) and Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz).

Orlando Magic star Aaron Gordon was originally scheduled to participate but withdrew due to injury.

Here were the judges for the Slam Dunk Contest:

Round 1:

48. player. 118. Mitchell started by bringing in a second backboard but didn’t pull it as far out as the other hoop leaving the backboard behind the baseline. Coming from the scorer’s table, Mitchell threw the ball off the backboard behind the baseline, caught it and slammed it home with a windmill. The judges scored it a 48. Victor Oladipo started behind the three-point line for his first attempt, throwing it high in the air and letting it bounce off the court. He then tried to catch it and windmill it with both hands while approaching the hoop from the side. He missed his first attempt.<p>He tried again on his second attempt slammed the ball into the front of the rim. Oladipo missed his third and final attempt as well.</p><p>Oladipo scored a 31, one point higher than the lowest allowable. 79. Mavericks star Dennis Smith Jr. tried a 360-spinning windmill dunk and failed to connect. On Smith’s second attempt he tried a different dunk, very similar to Oladipo’s minus the bounce off the court. A double-pump slam coming down the key. Larry Nance Jr.. 44. player. 156. Cavaliers star Larry Nance Jr. called for help from the quick change act to start his first attempt. At midcourt he had the curtain pulled up and changed into his Dad’s Phoenix Suns uniform. Nance Jr. missed with his first attempt, his dad’s cradle dunk. He tried it again and nailed it on his second attempt. Every judge scored it a nine, but DJ Khaled who scored it an eight.. First Round. 1st Attempt

player. 100. Victor Oladipo started his second attempt of the first round by donning a Black Panther mask, they’re in Hollywood after all. Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played the superhero, helped Oladipo put it on.<p>Oladipo missed on the first but landed the second with a tomahawk into a windmill.</p><p>Oladipo got a score of 40, getting a high score of nine from DJ Khaled which was surprising.</p>. It took Dennis Smith Jr. three tries in his second attempt, but he landed a 360-degree dunk, passing the ball through his legs while changing hands and dunking with his left. It was 10s across the board for a perfect score of 50.. First Round. 2nd Attempt. Dennis Smith Jr.. 50. player. 79

First Round. 2nd Attempt. Larry Nance Jr.. 49. player. 156. Nance’s second dunk was a 360-degree windmill starting from behind the baseline ala Vince Carter. He made it on his first attempt and the judges liked the dunk. Nance was scored a 49, DJ Khaled the lone judge to not give Nance a 10.

Donovan Mitchell brought out his little sister and stood her under the basket. Mitchell then went and got Kevin Hart and his son and brought them onto the court to stand next to his sister.<p>An assistant threw the ball off the edge of the backboard, Mitchell caught it and tomahawked it while jumping over the trio. Larry Nance Jr. brought out his father to assist on the dunk. Senior stood in the key and tossed it up for an alley-oop, Junior getting it for the windmill finish. He celebrated by walking over and high-fiving Kevin Hart.<p>The judges scored it a 46, every judge scoring it a nine except for DJ Khaled who gave it a 10.</p>. Championship Round. 1st Attempt. Donovan Mitchell went to toss it off the backboard and didn’t like the throw so aborted the dunk. On the second toss he caught it one-handed in the tomahawk position and slammed it in. Larry Nance Jr.. 50. player. 156. Larry Nance Jr.’s second dunk was a combination of elements. He ran up the key, tossed it off the backboard and caught it with both hands. He then bounced the ball a second time off the glass and dunked it.<p>The judges gave it a perfect 50.</p>. Championship Round. 2nd Attempt

player. 118. Larry Nance Jr. had 96 pts through his two dunks so Mitchell needed a score of 47 or higher to win. Mitchell pulled out the big guns, pulling off his jersey to reveal a vintage Vince Carter Toronto Raptors jersey.<p>He replicated Carter’s 360-degree tomahawk jump and celebrated by pointing the double arrows and giving the throat-slit, it’s over motion, exactly as Carter did in 2000.</p><p>The judges scored it a 48, giving Mitchell the win.</p>. Mitchell’s final score in the championship round was a 98, edging out Nance’s score of 96. Mitchell walks away as the 2018 Slam Dunk Contest champion and Nance walks away feeling robbed.
