MLB Rumors: Diamondbacks sign Jarrod Dyson to two-year deal

The Arizona Diamondback have reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with outfielder Jarrod Dyson.

After losing out on J.D. Martinez to the Boston Red Sox, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly signed outfielder Jarrod Dyson, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Heyman also reports the deal is for two years and worth $7.5 million. The Diamondbacks had hoped to re-sign coveted outfielder J.D. Martinez, but just as most people expected, he ended up with the Red Sox.

The Diamondbacks, though, are still planning to contend for a World Series. And this signing proves that. They’ve still got a talented lineup and a decent rotation headlined by Zack Greinke. Dyson is a good fielder, and he’ll bring plenty of speed to Arizona. In 2017, he stole 28 bases. For his career, he’s swiped an impressive 204 bases.

Dyson, 33, last played for the Seattle Mariners, where he slashed .251/.324/.350 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 2017. Those numbers might not stand out, but his speed and defensive abilities still make him a valuable player for a team that already has plenty of power bats.

Dyson previously spent the first seven years of his career with the Kansas City Royals, where he frequently made highlight defensive plays. Most notable was an incredible diving catch in Game 4 of the 2014 World Series. The Diamondbacks will now hope to benefit from his stellar defense.

A.J. Pollock will become a free agent next season. So Dyson will give Arizona some added depth should Pollock leave next year.

Dyson might only be small consolation signing after missing out on J.D. Martinez, but he still helps in keeping Arizona afloat in the NL West race.
