The Cleveland Indians almost won it all in 2016, and now they brought back one of their glue guys to spring training.

The Cleveland Indians have a dominant pitching staff, and it is the backbone of their team, ascending to the top of the American League Central because of it. On a World Series contending team, there are always players that can act as a rock.

With that said, the Indians brought back a guy that was huge for them during their World Series run in 2016 in the form of first baseman Mike Napoli.

The slugger mashed 34 home runs for the Tribe in that magical 2016 season, the best offensive season of his career. Beside his production at the plate, Napoli is a veteran presence in the clubhouse that serves as a mentor and someone players can rely on to boost morale. Napoli has never been a star, but his on-the-ball personality is one that is contagious to other players. Here is what manager Terry Francona said on the signing:

"“It’s a little bit of a unique situation,” Francona said. “He wanted a chance to be in a Major League camp. There’s a decent chance we’re going to get him ready to have him go on another team and help beat us. Saying that, I think we all felt like he deserved it. He’s such a pro, so special to us.”"

So, Napoli is a player that is valued on the field as well as in the clubhouse. Unfortunately, he may not make the major league club because of his position. Hopefully, there is a way for Cleveland to keep him on the roster.

Next: Rangers sign Tim Lincecum

He is blocked by Edwin Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso at 1B and DH, but Napoli could be an insurance policy down the line. Starting pitcher Josh Tomlin is an example of what Napoli’s presence brings to the team.

"“I went and jumped on his back,” Tomlin said. “His veteran presence, his leadership, how he goes about his business on a daily basis is huge. He’s a good guy to have around for young guys, old guys, it doesn’t matter, [even] for the coaching staff. It’s fun to have him back. It’s good to get to see him already.”"

The first baseman will be a great addition to the team if he makes it out of spring training. The Indians could be back on top of the AL with his leadership and contagious presence.
