The 2008 NCAA Tournament was a rare one for college basketball followers. It was one of the only times all No. 1 seeds made the Final Four, which made it that much more of a heavyweight battle.

Kansas emerged from the Midwest Region to face off against Memphis from the South. The Jayhawks had just demolished North Carolina in the Final Four and stopped a Steph Curry-led Davidson Cinderella story in the Elite Eight. To say the Jayhawks were riding high would be an understatement.

However, John Calipari’s Memphis Tigers were also dismantling teams on the way to the national title. The game went down to the wire, and that’s where Mario Chalmers came in.

Derrick Rose made a free throw to put Memphis up by three with 10.8 seconds left and the Jayhawks went down the court and hit Chalmers, who took a dribble to his left and nailed the tying 3-pointer at the top of the arc, sending the game to overtime.

Chalmers finished with 18 points in the title game and helped lead the Jayhawks past Memphis in overtime for the win. He was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player.
