Loyola’s mascot is technically the Ramblers but let’s be real: it’s actually Sister Jean and we need to make the official switch.

Sister Jean is a Rock Star, capital letters all the way. She’s a 98-year old chaplain to a small D-I basketball school in Chicago, but March Madness has made her into one of the most famous people on the planet.

It’s time to cut out the middle man and do what needs to be done: Loyola needs to rename itself after Sister Jean. At the very least, can we grant her Sainthood?

The program technically already has a mascot — the Ramblers — but nothing and no on has been more identifiable with the school than Sister Jean. Her legacy has been solidifed and so too has that of the Ramblers she’s been supporting.

Credit goes to the players for getting the team this far and the fans for being die-hards the whole way, but Sister Jean is the matriarch of joy.

After the Ramblers clinched a spot in the Final Four, Sister Jean was right there with the team at center court to celebrate. She even got her own Final Four shirt.

She even has her own bobblehead, as well as her own shoes:

This is what March is all about, and truthfully it’s what fandom is all about. Sister Jean has a life away from basketball where she’s dedicated her existence to bettering the world. She’s channeled that goodwill into being an ambassador for an underdog that is realizing its potential.

It’s impossible to not be in love with Sister Jean. The school may not rename the program after her, but her legacy has been etched into the history of Loyola-Chicago. Mascot or not, when we think of the 2018 Loyola Ramblers, we’re never going to not be able to think of Sister Jean.
