In his first Masters tournament since 2015 Tiger Woods turned in less than stellar performance over the first two rounds to barely make this year’s cut.

The odds-on favorite in many books heading into Augusta was none other than Tiger Woods. In recent form Woods has shown signs of resurgence namely at the Valspar Championship. Over the first two days the four-time Masters Champion couldn’t quite live up to expectations and barely made it into the weekend’s play.

After promising practice rounds with Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples the hopes were high for Woods’ 21st Masters appearance. His opening round started well enough opening with two routine pars bouncing back from a wayward tee shot on the opening hole. On the par-4 3rd hole Woods sparked hope in golf fans around the world with an early birdie.

Woods would follow that birdie with two straight bogeys to drop to 1-over par. More bad news arose at 11 and 12 with another stretch of back to back bogeys. Down the stretch Woods seemed to get back to form as he finished with two birdies over his six holes to finish the first round with a 1-over score of 73.

With conditions stiffening up at Augusta as the afternoon began at Augusta the second round competitors had to deal with quick green and swirling wind Friday. The first hole of the day bit back at Tiger resulting in an opening bogey. Four holes later at the par-4 5th a double bogey reared its’ ugly head dropping him down to 4-under for the tournament.

As the cut-line began to hover near 5-over that’s exactly what Woods sank to after another bogey at 12th hole. A birdie gave Woods some breathing room at the par-5 13th. He would go on to par the 14th hole before coming back to the final par-5 of the day at 15. After a successful second shot just found the edge of the green Woods two-putted to knock in another birdie and get to 3-over for the tournament.

Just as there seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel Woods faltered at the 16th with another bogey. Woods finished with a 3-over 75 for a two-day opening 4-over total. Woods narrowly made the cut but will tee it up this weekend to try and make a miracle comeback for his fifth green jacket.
