Odell Beckham Jr. will report to the Giants’ offseason program on Monday, but is it a ploy to foster a trade?

As a team with a new head coach, the New York Giants can start their offseason program a little early. But all eyes will be on just one of the players coming in, as ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported Odell Beckham Jr. will report to the start of offseason conditioning on Monday.

Beckham has been the frequent subject of trade rumors. But the Los Angeles Rams, the most notable suitor, made a trade with the New England Patriots for wide receiver Brandin Cooks last week. A rumored high asking price from the Giants, as could be expected for a player of his talent, has dimmed trade speculation regarding Beckham.

Beckham also wants a new contract, entering the final year of his rookie deal that is set to pay him just shy of $8.5 million. An ankle injury that shortened his 2017 season is also a point of interest for the Giants, and team doctors will be able to check on that when he shows up in New Jersey.

Giants’ head coach Pat Shurmur has said he expects Beckham to be present for the offseason program, which is technically voluntary until a mandatory minicamp in mid-June. Coming in from Los Angeles in time to report Monday, in order to “check in, work out in the gym and meet with some people” is nothing more than a sort-of goodwill gesture from Beckham.

It seems clear Beckham won’t be with his teammates and a new coaching staff for very long, unless something changes.

Absent a contract extension out of the blue, Beckham is set to do his part, be a proverbial “good soldier” and show up to the start of Giants’ offseason work. If he wants that big new contract that’s the best route in a show of immediate commitment, but being there on Day 1 of the offseason program is also a good plan if Beckham wants to help facilitate a trade.
