Barcelona still sit firmly in first place in La Liga going into the last few matches of the season. They still have yet to lose a league game in 31 tries so far. Ernesto Valverde’s side seemed to be poised to do the double this year, but a stunning comeback from Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday stifled their hopes. It would be even more stunning to see them lose their grip on La Liga’s title race, but other clubs, smelling blood in the water, might be able to pounce while the time is right. Valencia will be one of those teams looking to, at the very least, give Barcelona their first league loss.
Valencia sit in third place in the league table, just three points behind second placed Atletico Madrid. While they have benefited from a much weaker Real Madrid side than in the past, all credit goes to manager Marcelino Toral and the players for a terrific season so far. However, they don’t have the easiest of schedules to end the season, playing five of their last seven matches against teams in the top half of La Liga. Valencia did draw against Barcelona in their previous matchup, which could give them even more confidence in taking three points.
