Do the Giants have faith in Davis Webb as Eli Manning’s successor?

The New York Giants need to find a successor for Eli Manning, but is Davis Webb already a candidate to be that guy?

With the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, the New York Giants are in an enviable position. They can take a great talent to fill an immediate need while Eli Manning is still around, take a potential quarterback of the future or trade the pick to a team desperate to find their own long-term option under center.

There’s an argument that the Giants are rarely picking in the top-five overall, so the opportunity to find Manning’s successor from a deep group of quarterbacks can’t be passed up. But what if the Giants already have the guy they will groom to take over for the two-time Super Bowl MVP?

The Giants are having a minicamp this week, leading up to the start of the draft Thursday night. Head coach Pat Shurmur is looking forward to getting a look at Davis Webb, the team’s third-round pick in 2017 out of Cal.

"It will be a great way for Davis to sorta showcase what he can do,” Shurmur said, via the New York Post. “We don’t have a full 90-man roster so he’s gonna get a lot of reps and he probably would anyways. I don’t want to make this sound like it’s a showcase for Webb, but as a guy we’re interested in seeing, he’s certainly gonna get his fair share of the reps."

Fairly inexplicably, alongside the decision to end Manning’s consecutive start streak in favor of Geno Smith, Webb saw no regular season action as a rookie. He’s now headed for the roster bubble if the Giants draft a quarterback, with the general manager and coach that drafted him gone. But Shurmur is at least curious, and that’s a positive sign for Webb.

Webb finished top-10 in the country in passing yards (4,295 yards) and passing touchdowns (37) in 2016, and he has what NFL scouts would drool on as prototypical size (6-foot-5, 230 pounds). He also carried questions about his pro readiness, having played in a college spread offense, but a year of learning an NFL playbook has surely helped him.

Webb’s performance in a low-intensity minicamp shouldn’t change a potential plan by the Giants to draft a quarterback. But if Shurmur sees something he can mold for the future, an idea of Webb eventually taking over for Manning could move forward.
