If Barcelona win or draw the day after Real Madrid face Leganes, Madrid will officially be out of the title race. At this point, Zinedine Zidane’s best bet for winning silverware is through the Champions League. Madrid won 2-1 away from home against Bayern in the first leg of the semifinal, and they’ll likely prepare a much weakened/rotated squad to face Leganes to give their starters rest come next Tuesday. Madrid are four points behind Atletico with a game in hand, so second place is still in the equation. Obviously, that’s not the first priority, so this match is essentially a warm-up to their Champions League battle.
Leganes are just about guaranteed safety this season, sitting on 40 points, 12 above 18th place with four matches left to play. Unless Deportivo go on a scoring spree with four straight wins, Leganes are not going anywhere next season. They will likely face a rotational squad against Real Madrid due to their Champions League match, so this contest could be one to snatch while their guard is down.
