The trifecta and superfecta are two of the harder — and more lucractive — bets in horse racing. Here’s what they paid out at the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

To win a trifecta bet, you must correctly pick the top three finishers, in the correct order. To win a superfecta, you must do that for the top four finishers. It sounds simple, but it’s incredibly hard. Those that get it right, however, are in for quite the payday. At the 2018 Kentucky Derby, the trifecta paid out $141.40 on a $1 bet and the superfecta paid out $19,618.20 on a $1 bet.

Justify won the 2018 Kentucky Derby with Good Magic and Audible filling out the top three. None of those were particularly surprising, hence the relatively low trifecta return, but it was the upset of Instilled Regard with, at one point, 99-1 odds that turned the superfecta into such a massive win.

Entering the race, Justify was the favorite with 3-1 odds and My Boy Jack, Mendelssohn and Audible all shared 6-1 odds. Meaning, the top four seemed fairly locked in, but the exact order remained a major question. (The rain giving way to a sloppy track, too, threw bettors for a loop.) Previously, the 2018 puppy predictors on Jimmy Fallon resulted in a super clear winner for Mendelssohn, so that could have influenced gamblers too.

At the 2017 Kentucky Derby, the superfecta paid out $75,974.50 and the trifecta paid out $8,297.20 for the ticket that showed Always Dreaming, Lookin at Lee, Battle of the Midway and Classic Empire. The horses raced on a muddy, sloppy track last year as well.

Moral of the story: Nail the superfecta and you can take home bank.
