Florida is an ideal fit for Ohio State transfer quarterback Joe Burrow

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Joe Burrow is transferring and the Florida Gators could be his next home.

Joe Burrow is looking for a new school after graduating from Ohio State and is looking to finish his college career with a chance to show what he can do as a quarterback.

Burrow announced his plans to transfer in a tweet on May 8 that expressed just how difficult this decision was for him while also thanking and showing love to his former coaches and teammates.

"“After weeks of struggling with this decision, I have decided to leave Ohio State and explore other options. My teammates and coaches all know the love I feel for them. I will decide where I will play next year in the coming weeks.”"

Burrow came to Ohio State as a four-star recruit and the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in his class but couldn’t crack the starting lineup on what was a loaded depth chart in Columbus. Burrow served as J.T. Barrett’s backup in 2016 after redshirting in 2015 but fell behind Dwayne Haskins in 2017 on the depth chart.

With Haskins expected to earn the starting quarterback job over Tate Martell this year, Burrow is looking to use the rest of his eligibility elsewhere as he looks to get on the field.

The 6-3, 218-pound quarterback is now a top free agent of sorts and should have the attention of programs from across the country.

LSU and Cincinnati have already been granted permission to speak with him, according to Sports Illustrated. Nebraska makes a lot of sense considering Burrow’s father and brothers played for the Huskers and Scott Frost could use a veteran signal-caller to step in the position vacated by Tanner Lee.

I think the ideal fit for Burrow, however, is with Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators. The Gators have famously struggled to find a star quarterback since Tim Tebow and have failed to develop blue-chip recruits like Feleipe Franks and Jeff Driskel or get anything out of transfer, Malik Zaire.

With Franks still on the roster, Mullen has said he’s not actively pursuing the transfer market, but that could be lip service to make sure Franks doesn’t transfer out. I think it’s fair to say Franks isn’t going to work out at Florida and Mullen didn’t recruit him so he may not be sold on giving him a chance.

Burrow is largely inexperienced with only 39 career pass attempts, but he looked great in the Ohio State spring game, completing 15-of-22 passes for 234 yards and a pair of scores. He could be what Mullen is looking for to provide an immediate impact at the position and some stability and the most important position in the sport.

Burrow will take the next few weeks to think about where he’ll transfer, but the Florida Gators present the best situation for him to start at a marquee program and potentially play himself into an NFL Draft prospect.
