Deprived of NHL postseason, Oilers’ Connor McDavid shows out at Worlds
No playoffs, no problem for Connor McDavid. He scored a hat trick for Team Canada in a 5-0 win against Norway.
The fact the hockey world did not get to see Connor McDavid in the playoffs this season is disappointing. He is one of the most electrifying young stars in the game. The one positive about the Edmonton Oilers being a trainwreck is the fact that Connor McDavid is representing Canada at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
Canada has picked up three wins in four games so far in the tournament, and in those four games Connor McDavid has 10 points. Three of those 10 points came against Norway as goals.
One of the best goals of the afternoon paid homage to the great Bobby Orr. Today marks the 48th anniversary of Bobby Orr’s famous goal that sent him flying through the air. It has become one of hockey’s most famous pictures and moments. McDavid didn’t exactly fly through the air and it certainly wasn’t to win a Stanley Cup, but it is still fitting Canada’s next greatest player scored a similar goal on the anniversary.

Those other two goals today were also pretty good. Connor McDavid showed everything that makes him elite. He should his high-end speed on his first goal to work his way around the offensive zone and then cutting to the front of the net. He then showed off his elite puck handling skills to make every defenseman miss. Connor McDavid on the larger international ice surface is simply not fair. His hands are too good and he is too fast for the competition.

There is still time to catch Connor McDavid and the star-studded Team Canada lineup before the tournament is over. Their next game is May 12 against Finland. Finland will pose a much tougher test than Norway did. Finland has a talented lineup of their own with NHL players such as Mikko Rantanen, Teuvo Teravainen and Mikael Granlund.
