NBC’s Pierre McGuire believes nobody knows who Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets is.

One of the best things about the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs has been seeing new heroes emerge. Everyone now knows who David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins is. Evgeny Kuznetsov’s series-winning goal puts him in a spotlight he has long deserved. And best of all, Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele has gotten attention for being an awesome player.

He has nine goals and five assists for 14 points entering Thursday’s Game 7 against the Nashville Predators. Only Jake Guentzel (10) has more goals than him so far this postseason. However, Pierre McGuire still thinks nobody knows who he is.

Early in Game 7, NBC’s favorite interviewer called Scheifele “the best known player that nobody really knows”.

OK, let’s break that down. First of all, does Pierre realize he just contradicted himself? If you’re a known player, this means people know who you are. So if you’re a known player, it’s impossible for nobody to really know who you are. That’s how fame works. You can’t be famous and have no one know who you are.

Secondly, even casual hockey fans have probably at least heard of Scheifele. If they haven’t, they don’t know what they’re missing. His 0.97 points per game over the past three regular seasons rank 10th in the NHL. Yes, Winnipeg has the worst market of all the Canadian cities. But still, just about anyone who has ever seen Scheifele play or stared at the league leaders in points remembers his name.

McGuire is famous for saying silly things, but this is easily among his funniest sayings ever. And the odd thing is, this isn’t the first time he has said it.

Having Pierre on television regularly is either the best thing ever or the worst thing ever, depending on how you look at it. If you appreciate McGuire’s encyclopedic knowledge of every hockey player and their junior career, he’s great. But if you don’t…well, good luck.
