DraftKings Main MLB Picks July 7: Pay up for Scherzer?
It feels weird tabbing a four game slate as main, but that’s where we are on this Saturday. Most of the good pitchers are going in the afternoon, but he do have one stud left over for the nightcap. Is he worth paying top dollar for? Let’s check some stats for this slate.

Next: DraftKings Pitcher Plays

Top Tier:
Max Scherzer ($14,300): On the all day slate, there is no way that Scherzer is worth the price. However, with the slim pickings at night, Scherzer is the only truly elite option. The Marlins are hitting a decent .246 off of Max with five homers and 15 runs in 142 at bats. Not exactly the kind of dominance you want for nearly a quarter of your salary allotment. If you have the money though, Max is going to be the best player on the night slate. I’m not sure you can recoup the points from another pitcher.
Robbie Ray ($9,200): The Padres are only hitting .235 against Ray in 85 at bats with four homers and seven RBI with a strong 30 strikeouts. If Ray can avoid the long ball, he could be in for a truly great score. The Padres are having issues scoring runs lately. This isn’t good for that to change. The problem is that Ray has a 7.88 ERA at home this year.
Middle Tier:
David Price ($9,000): Price has predictably struggled at times in Fenway, but he has actually been worse on the road. The Royals still aren’t hitting the ball all that well, so there is legitimate upside here for Price. If he can stay away from Salvy, he will be among the highest scorers of the night. However, Price does only have nine strikeouts of 63 Royals batters to face him.
Tyson Ross ($7,500): Ross is 2-2 with a 2.96 ERA in nine career games in Chase Field. That belies just how hard the Diamondbacks have hit him. That said, they have not hit him well, just hard. The Diamondbacks are only hitting .174 in 115 at bats, but they do have 16 runs with only 38 strikeouts. Still, there is nothing in the middle tier outside of overpaying for Stripling or David Price. If you are moving off of Scherzer, you almost have to use Ross.
Bargain Pitchers:
Brad Keller ($4,200): Keller’s pricing is really ridiculous here. He has 51.3 DraftKings points over his last two starts against the Mariners and Angels, both of which are pretty good offenses. Yes, the Red Sox are better, but this game isn’t in Fenway. Keller has more than proven himself, so I will gladly take him this cheap. He’s not going to beat the Red Sox, and Keller will likely give up four or five runs. That said, he will still get double digit points. That’s good enough for this price.

Top Tier:
There is no easy way to say this, but Ross Stripling is overpriced. He had a great run as a starter early on, but he has not been above 16 DraftKings points in any of his last three starts. This is not a good spot for him to get back into the mid 20’s. The Angels are a good offense, and Mike Trout has already homered off of him. Justin Upton is worth a look as well. Luis Valbuena could be a good pick if you need to go cheaper.
Paul Goldschmidt is 8-26(.308) with two homers and six RBI against Tyson Ross. Jeff Mathis is the only other Diamondback to homer off of Ross, but David Peralta does have three RBI.
Deck McGuire was hammered by the Orioles on Sunday. Keep in mind that this is an Orioles team that hasn’t been scoring runs lately. The Dodgers are in a great spot here. I have reservations in my lineup for Muncy and Bellinger for sure. I also like Matt Kemp, Chris Taylor, and Joc Pederson.

Middle Tier:
Salvador Perez is 5-14 with three homers and four RBI off of David Price.
Mark Reynolds has two homers and four RBI in just ten at bats against Wei-Yin Chen. Trea Turner and Wilmer Difo have homered off of him as well. Want to know the best stat here: Chen has a 1.89 ERA at home and a 9.85 ERA on the road. Fire up those right handed Nationals bats!
Hunter Renfroe has three hits in nine tries against Robbie Ray. All three of those have cleared the fence. Hosmer has also homered in his only at bat against Robbie Ray.
Bargain Shoppers:
Cheap Marlins about tonight with Scherzer on the hill, but a couple of them could be worth a look. Derek Dietrich is 6-25(.240) with two homers and five RBI against Scherzer. Miguel Rojas, Martin Prado, and Justin Bour have all homered off of him as well.
Alcides Escobar came through with a hit and a RBI off of one of the best pitchers in the league last night. He is still worth a look whenever a lefty is on the hill.
