Minnesota Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns is excited to face the Golden State Warriors and their new center.

Karl-Anthony Towns is a talented basketball player, but DeMarcus Cousins was a Western Conference starter in the All-Star Game last season. He also just joined the Golden State Warriors. Towns had some interesting thoughts on Cousins signing with the defending champs.

“I think that was a surprising move for all of us,” Towns said to FanSided at the 2018 Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards. “We all didn’t see that coming, but again, for Golden State, that’s a heck of a player you’re getting and a guy who I think is going to come back very strong, and he’s going to give great numbers, and he’s going to be able to help.”

He doesn’t think that Cousins on the Warriors upsets competitive balance either.

“No, it makes me happier. I like when they are built better, because it gives me a chance to go out there with a team that is supposedly built better on paper, and go out there and compete against them and try to beat them. It gets my competitive juices going. I’m worried about making sure we go in there and we beat every team.”

That kind of competitor is exactly who Minnesota should want to build their franchise around. The Timberwolves are having a summer full of rumor and speculation. Apparently, Jimmy Butler isn’t the biggest fan of Towns to the point that he wouldn’t sign a contract extension, and that means the small forward will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks have been mentioned publicly as possible landing spots for Butler.

That was a ton of money to leave on the table for Jimmy Buckets, and it’s shocking that he would potentially want to move on from the T-Wolves and head coach Tom Thibodeau. After all the latest news though, it would honestly be a bit stunning if Butler and Towns are both on the roster when training camp starts, but this also might be a situation that stretches out to the trade deadline. At the end of the day, it seems that their relationship has run its course.

The Warriors and Wolves could meet each other in the playoffs this coming year, which would be a fascinating series. We’ll get some previews during the regular season, but it would be amazing to see how Towns fares against a healthy Cousins, who is currently rehabbing from a brutal Achilles injury.

Towns will have a lot more responsibility next season if the Timberwolves move Butler, but the young man is ready for this moment. He’s a player who looks forward to the challenge of competing against the best, and that’s all we can ask for from an NBA star.
